Supported Karaoke Formats

Karaoke is more of a concept then a format like Music, or Video. Karaoke simply displays the lyrics on the screen during playback of the instrumental version of a song. This can happen using any video format, or by using the Karaoke industry standard, a "CDG". After ripping a CD containing lyrics (CDG) to your PC, karaoke files will usually be stored in 2 separate files (.mp3 and .cdg). The MP3 file is the music, and the .CDG file contains a visual depiction of the lyrics (a special animated version of a bitmap). Sometimes, the two files (.mp3 and .cdg) are stored together in a .ZIP file. Jukebox Jockey supports both MP3+G as well as a karaoke .ZIP. The only concern with .ZIP files is that in order to read the tags, Jukebox Jockey must decompress the .ZIP, read the tag out of the .MP3, and dump the temporary files. This takes a long time if you have lots of files. So we've disabled this feature by default. Therefore, Jukebox Jockey will rely on the file masks unless you turn this function back on. You can do this in Jukebox Jockey's Settings>Media>Media Folder Configuration>[Select a collection]>File Masks.

  • MP3+G (MP3 & CDG files)
  • ZIP (MP3 & CDG files zipped)
  • VIDEO (any video format, as listed above)
